The
Athens Olympic Stadium,
venue for the 2008 IAAF Athens Super
Grand Prix "Tsiklitiria", was the centre of the 2004 Olympic Games.
It is situated at the Athens
suburb of Amaroussion, and is part of the Athens
Olympic Sports Complex (OAKA).
In the 2004 Olympics, the Olympic
Stadium hosted 72,000 spectators, who attended the exciting
athletics events, the
football gold medal match as well
as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
The stadium was built in 1982, in time
for the European Athletics Championships of that year.
Following an ATHENS 2004 and Ministry of Culture
initiative, the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava
designed the upgrade of the Stadium,
including the new roof structure.
It has an elastic track with 9
lanes, a clinic, designated areas for VIPs and
members of the Press, and is fully accessible for
the disabled.
